    About Us

    What makes a good Guidance or Counselling professional?

    Is it about skills, personality, knowledge, creativity or some combination of all of these?

    This site has been created to engage with issues of interest to Guidance and Counselling Practitioners and Researchers. It is curated by Peter Beven, Gill Naylor and Paula Benton, all academics and guidance and counselling practitioners.

    Peter Beven


    Peter Beven teaches on the Guidance and Counselling route of the BA Joint Honours degree at Northumbria University and is Teaching Fellow of Northumbria University.

    Research interests include the use of a range of different approaches to support clients in self-assessment, learning and decision-making. He has delivered conference papers and training sessions for a wide range of organisations, in the public and private sectors, both in the UK and abroad. he is a member of the International Association of Educational and Vocational Guidance.

    Paula Benton

    Paula’s professional background is Career Guidance and she worked as a Careers Adviser in the North East of England, specialising in careers education.  She went on to become a senior manager with responsibility for staff development for the Connexions service in Northumberland were she developed accredited Guidance programmes for a range of professionals in education, work based learning, youth and adult community settings.

    She has developed several national award winning projects which test innovative approaches to guidance and learner support, has written a number of articles for national and international guidance publications and co authored the ‘Tutoring for Transition’ publication which won an Institute of Career Guidance Award.

    Paula has been teaching at Northumbria University for 6 years and areas of interest include; career development theory, guidance systems and processes, employability and youth workforce development.


    Gill Naylor


    Gill teaches on two part routes of the Joint honours programme, Guidance and Counselling and Childhood Studies, and is Programme Leader for the Guidance and Counselling part route.

     Gill has a professional background as a Careers/Personal Adviser working with young people facing multiple issues and latterly within staff training. She has taught at Northumbria University for 9 years firstly on the Qualification in Career Guidance and more recently the Joint Honours degree.

    Gill’s areas of academic interest include equality and human rights, young people on the margins of society, effective group facilitation and concepts of childhood in history.

    Gill has also co-authored two publications, the ‘Stop, Look and Achieve’ Induction Pack and ‘Tutoring for Transitions’ both of which were winners of Institute of Career Guidance Awards.
